Dan Lachman: Designing Entrepreneurial Style

Dan Lachman runs the Sharp Shirter T-Shirt design company. His designs are featured in Urban Outfitters, Lord & Taylors, YRB and many others nationwide. He is a student at Wesleyan University.
What is the name of your company?
Sharp Shirter
How did it get started?
I started coming up with t-shirt ideas when I was in 10th grade. Ithought it would be cool to send out my ideas to t-shirt companies, havethem print my ideas, and then I could get $50 and a free shirt or two. After sending my ideas over to a couple of sites, they hated them. In a moment of high school angst I decided that I would make the designs myself and make those companies rue the day that they didn't take my stuff. The one problem was that I couldn't draw. In the next year or so,I worked on tracking down some fantastic designers to help me bring my ideas to life (this year of searching was a blessing in disguise because the t-shirt companies were right: my ideas had sucked!) Now armed with sweet designers and better ideas, Sharp Shirter slowly evolved from ahigh school pipedream into a business with the possibility of being my full time job once I finish college.
Where is it based?
It is based out of my basement in Washington D.C.
What are the goals of your company?
The main goal of Sharp Shirter is to offer an alternative to mainstreamdesigns. T-shirts are not a groundbreaking product, but what you do with the blank canvas of a tee can separate you from the competition.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Five years from now I see myself working full time for my business. I’mthinking about moving to a nice warm climate like California, so that I can sell tees year round. I’d also like to expand my product line, and move onto vinyl toys (like Kid Robot) or skins for the back of laptops (like Gelaskins). As long as I can continue to be creative and work with designers, I’m game for almost anything.
What motivates you?
I’m motivated by the fear of eventually working a 9-5 for someone else. I’ve worked a couple 9-5ers already, and there’s something soul-sucking about settling into a daily routine. I never want to be settled in comfortably in my line of work, and with Sharp Shirter, I can’t be, since I constantly have to be thinking of new concepts ranging from new designs for tees to how better to infiltrate the retail market.
What is a typical work day like?
Luckily I don’t have a typical work day. I can work when I want to, and do other things when I don’t. There’s always something waiting for me to attend to, but unless it’s an order with a cancel date, or an approaching trade show, I can see to things when I’m ready to.
How do you achieve the balance between school and work?
Along with taking 2 psych classes to fulfill my requirements as a psychmajor, I take 2 easy ones (e.g. Steel Band), so that I can focus my energies on the company. I definitely want to get my degree (so that myparents don’t kill me for dropping out), but I view the degree as a backup in case Sharp Shirter doesn’t work out.

Paul Orange: Presiding Over District Entertainment

Paul Orange is the President of Blackhouse Entertainment Group. He attends Morehouse College.
What is the name of your company? Blackhouse Entertainment Group. I am currently the President of Blackhouse Entertainment group as well as the DJ on the Blackhouse Entertainment group. In addition to a record label, we provide party promotion through 1214 Productions, which is based in Atlanta. How did it get started? During 11th grade in high school, my current business partners, Gram Green (Brad Seamon) and Tahir (Chief) Madyun, came up with the idea of establishing a label that showcases vintage hip hop style and DC talent. In my 12th grade year, I presented them with samples of chopped & screwed mixtapes I had put together. They liked them and invited me to join them on the record label. Where is the Blackhouse Entertainment Group based? We are primarily based in Washington, D.C. However, members of the group attend Morehouse College (Atlanta, Georgia), Rutgers University (New Jersey), and St. John's University (New York).
What are the goals of your company? We want to bring back quality music. There are a lot of artists in the game right now putting out quality but there are more putting out one hit wonders. We believe in music diversity, however we believe more in music quality. We believe that music should cater to our culture in a positive way. Blackhouse is the representation of the way things should be in the music industry. Right now we are based mainly within hip-hop/rap. However as time progresses we will expand to other music genres such as R&B, neosoul, and gogo. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Alive, first of all. I see myself growing and maturing mentally, physically, and spiritually. I want Blackhouse to be seen as a couple of educated brothers coming together and tirelessly pursuing their dreams. I want it to be known that DC has a lot to offer outside of politics. I want people to see that we are on top of our game politically as well as musically. In five years, there will be a sign upon entrance to DC that will say “Welcome to DC: Home of Blackhouse Entertainment Group”. I also have plans to give back to my community in thanks for those who have helped me along the way. I strongly feel that Blackhouse will reach the top and will be respected as one of the most successful entertainment groups in the country as well as a positive group within the community. What motivates you? I am mainly motivated by my family. They have been my backbone and my rock. They have kept me motivated and humble. Also, my education motivates me. I am a full scholarship student and I plan to use my knowledge to its greatest potential. I plan to show all of those who believed in me that I can reach great heights. Various things motivate me though. I feel that everyone has something to bring to the table that is inspirational. How do you achieve the balance between school and work? In general, it all comes down to time management. Being in school, you learn that time management is one the greatest things that can either help you or hurt you. A lot of people do not have the proper time management skills and feel the affects of it. Every week I take out a sheet of paper and plan each activity and goal for the week. I stay on top of my books. If I’m not on top of my books, then Blackhouse won’t happen.
What should the world expect from Black House Entertainment Group in the near future?
Expect for Gram Green to drop his 2nd Mixtape Soon. He has been in the lab grinding it out to make good music. Expect for me, DJ Black House, to put out a lot of mixtapes including the 1st Chopped & Screwed GoGo Mixtape ever in the history of DC & C&S Music. Also, be on the lookout for 1214 Productions to be back on the scene soon, and for the release of our Graphic Designing Company Black Magic Designs.
